Overview of the ATPCA

Purpose

History

The Australian Tennis Professional Coaches Association Ltd (known as ATPCA) is a non profit organisation of Tennis Coaches. There are currently 650 Members most of whom are/have been accredited with the Australian Sports Commission and endorsed by Tennis Australia.

The objects for which the Company is established include:

to provide organisations such as Schools, Councils, Colleges etc with

   qualified tennis coaches.

to uphold high standards in the teaching and development of tennis.

to publish education material (including videos and DVD) for the benefit of.

    members

to provide members with various benefits including economical quality    insurance, magazines, sponsorships (rackets etc..), promotional material.

to encourage active participation in all forms of tennis playing, and tennis    coaching.

to apply income towards the promotion of the objects of the company.

As well as some of the objects mentioned above, the ATPCA was formed in 1966 to provide an alternate modern approach to physical training and tennis coaching. Prior to de-regulation of the industry in 1997, it was not possible to obtain official coach accreditation other than through one organisation. As a consequence progress in the education of coaches became limited.

Subsequent deregulation by Act of Parliament allowed a wider range of experienced educators and advanced coaches to contribute at an official level.

The ATPCA was formed as a company in 1966 by a group of sports and tennis persons, originally focused on physical education. In 1993 the name of Australian Tennis Professional Coaches Association was formally adopted.

In 1997 the ATPCA was approved as a provider for the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) and at that time, Tennis Australia and its related coaching arm withdrew from the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (ASC) leaving the ATPCA for 4 years as the sole Government accredited coaching provider for tennis. Subsequently Tennis Australia re-attached to the NCAS and the ATPCA became and Endorsed Coaching Agency for Tennis Australia (until Jan07).
